This was the first album I owned. Brings back many memories of singing along, alone in my bedroom. 'I was Madonna'. Great album!

Back in 1984, Madonna had hit the big time. At home, she had released a string of hits from her first album and in the UK had hits with 'Holiday' and 'Lucky Star'. Then 'Like A Virgin' came along and Madonna shot into the stratosphere. There's no doubt that the first two singles released off this album, its title track and 'Material Girl' are two of Madonna's most popular and enduring hits. Accompanied by equally memorable videos, they epitomise her early career. Unfortunately, the album from which they are taken fails to ignite. The first half of the album is merely filler around the two hits. Both 'Angel' and 'Over And Over' (co-written with Stephen Bray) are below average pop songs which fail to go anywhere. Indeed, third single 'Angel' barely even changes for the chorus! Sat in the middle of the album like a bloated albatross is a simply awful cover of 'Love Don't Live Here Anymore' with plodding drums and poor production. As a showcase of Madonna's ability to perform a ballad, it fails. Early vocals sound strangulated and it simply emphasises her limitations. Why this was remixed for (and released as a single from!!!) her 'Something To Remember' collection of the mid-90s is anyone's guess. Fourth single 'Dress You Up' is a catchy tune, rightfully included on Madonna's 'Celebration' collection, but not quite as great as the two lead singles. The album concludes with the only three self-penned tracks here. 'Shoo-Bee-Doo', silly title aside, goes some way to make up for 'Love Don't Live Here Anymore', proving Madonna more than capable of pulling off a ballad. However, it just isn't memorable enough. The album closes with the b-sides to the first two singles; a shame really, as these are two of the more catchy tracks on the album and may have done well as singles. 'Pretender' has a good keyboard riff and decent chorus while 'Stay' bounces along and wouldn't have looked out of place on follow-up album 'True Blue'. A handful of songs were released contemporaneously with 'Like A Virgin' (Madonna notched up 7 top 5 UK singles in 1985 including a re-issue of 'Holiday') and any of these could have replaced the filler here and raised the album out of mediocrity. Unfortunately, there is little to recommend this album, other than for nostalgia or completists sake.

Oh this brings back some good memories. Still as good as I remember! Surprising how I can still remember the words. Excellent Album. One of the best ones from Madonna, and still really quite dancy and cheery!

I recently rediscovered this album and it sounds really fresh to me - reminded me exactly why Madonna became the force she is today. Brilliant... still.
